We have some good news. Beginning this year we have a new source of brown trout for the Brookville Tailwater. About a year ago, one of our members, Joe Thurston, found that the Wolf Creek Federal Fish Hatchery in Jamestown, KY produced trout for stocking below federal dams. The hatchery mission is to support fisheries in tailwaters below Army Corp of Engineers Dams. Joe thought that the Brookville Tailwater might qualify for these fish and approached Bill James with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) about pursuing this. Bill James made the appropriate contacts in the US Fish and Wildlife Service and recently informed us that he has secured annual stockings of 2,600 8-inch brown trout for stocking.
There is no cost for the fish and IDNR will provide the manpower and stocking truck to pick up the fish and deliver them to Brookville for stocking. The existing trout regulations will remain in effect at Brookville.
We now have a dilemma. What should be done with the funds currently in reserve for stocking fish? We will transfer the stocking funds over to a new fund that will be used for habitat improvement initiatives. The new fund will only be used for work at Brookville. Please feel free to contact us if you have other ideas for the funds. CITU cannot accept any new funding for brown trout stocking in 2007. Donations already received in 2007 will not be deposited. We want to thank all of you for your generous support for this program and we look forward to moving on to the next level.
